Booking a Charter? Here Is Your 3-Day Louisiana License Breakdown

Navigating the waters of the Barataria Basin is an unforgettable experience, but before you step onto the boat, ensuring you have the correct credentials is the first step toward a stress-free adventure. At Marsh Monster Charters, we want your focus to be on the trophy fish, not the paperwork. This guide provides everything you need to know about securing your Louisiana fishing license for your upcoming trip to Lafitte.

Who Needs a License?

In Louisiana, all anglers aged 18 and older are required to possess a valid fishing license. This applies to both residents and out-of-state visitors. If you are bringing the family along, you’ll be pleased to know that youth under the age of 18 (residents and non-residents) are exempt from license requirements, making it even easier to introduce the next generation to the marsh.

Saltwater vs. Freshwater Requirements

Because our Lafitte LA night fishing charters take place in the brackish marshes south of the state's designated "saltwater line," the licensing requirements are specific to what you plan to catch:

  • Basic Fishing License: Required for all freshwater species (like catfish or carp).
  • Saltwater License: Required in addition to the Basic License if you are targeting or possessing saltwater species (like redfish or black drum).
  • Recommendation: Since we often encounter a mix of species in the Barataria Basin, we strongly suggest getting both the Basic and Saltwater licenses to ensure you are fully covered for anything that ends up on the boat.

2026 License Pricing & Options

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) offers several convenient options tailored to the length of your stay:

Annual Basic Fishing

  • Resident: $17
  • Non-Resident: $68

Annual Saltwater (Add-on)

  • Resident: $15
  • Non-Resident: $60

Charter Passenger (3-Day)

  • Resident: $20
  • Non-Resident: $20

5-Day Basic Fishing

  • Resident: N/A
  • Non-Resident: $30

5-Day Saltwater (Add-on)

  • Resident: N/A
  • Non-Resident: $30

Note: The 3-Day Charter Passenger License ($20) is a popular, cost-effective choice for travelers as it covers both Basic and Saltwater species for three consecutive days while fishing with a licensed guide.

Special Exemptions and Discounts

  • Seniors: Louisiana residents age 60 or older can purchase a Senior Hunting/Fishing License for $5, which covers all recreational fishing activities. Residents born before June 1, 1940, are exempt from license requirements but must carry valid ID.
  • Military & Students: Active-duty military, National Guard, and full-time non-resident students are often eligible for licenses at resident rates.
  • Bowfishing Permit: While a recreational saltwater bowfishing permit is required for private trips, guests on a charter bowfishing trip with Captain Brandon are covered under the captain’s permit.

How to Purchase Your License

Getting your license is quick and can be done entirely from your smartphone:

  1. Online: Visit the LDWF Online License Site. You will receive an authorization number immediately via email, which serves as your legal license.
  2. Mobile App: Download the LA Wallet app to keep a digital copy of your license on your phone at all times.
  3. Local Retailers: If you prefer a physical copy, most local bait shops, hardware stores, and Walmart locations in the Lafitte area can issue them over the counter.

By securing your license ahead of time, you’ll be ready to hit the water the moment you arrive at our meeting location. If you have any specific questions about which license is right for your group, feel free to reach out—we’re here to help you get ready for a legendary day in the marsh!

A Visual Journey Through the Louisiana Backwaters

Step into the visual heart of the Barataria Basin and see exactly what makes Marsh Monster Charters the premier choice for a night on the water. Our gallery captures the raw beauty of the Lafitte marsh, from the golden glow of a bayou sunset to the prehistoric silhouette of a massive alligator gar breaking the surface. You will see our custom 2025 Gator Tail boat illuminated by high-powered LED lights, slicing through the shallowest reaches of the marsh to find where the "Big Five" hide. Every image tells a story of an adventure under the stars, featuring real guests landing trophy redfish, heavy black drum, and the legendary monsters that call these waters home.

Beyond the catch, these photos showcase the immersive atmosphere of the Louisiana swamp. Glimpse the vibrant local wildlife, the weathered charm of nearby fishing cabins, and the serene, glass-like water that only exists deep in the marsh after dark. Whether it’s the excitement on a child’s face during a family-friendly trip or the focused intensity of a night bowfishing excursion, our media collection provides a front-row seat to the authentic Lafitte, Louisiana experience. We invite you to explore the sights, feel the energy of the bayou, and imagine yourself in the middle of the action—scroll down to see the incredible moments waiting for you on your next trip.
